Creating a Wellness Plan While Maintaining Financial Wellness

Although it would be great if every company could install a gym onsite or hire a full-time wellness coach, there are less expensive ways to make a difference in the health of employees. To start, a great idea is to get a committee together! A few of us sat around brainstorming and thinking. Given that we’re a small company and don’t have a lot of resources, we needed to come up with a variety of things that we could do to help our employees. Try a couple of the healthy things we came up with and are doing such as: drinking a certain amount of water over a 4-week period, going for a walk during lunch breaks, or organizing a “healthy pot-luck lunch!” Also, encourage employees to take the stairs. For example, we are doing an “Avoid the Elevator” campaign!

Simply reminding employees with wellness tips such as getting cancer screenings or flu shots, and supplying them with information can be an effective and inexpensive way to improve their health. Post flyers around the office, send e-mails and distribute pamphlets.

Also, when you are planning, don’t forget that other things contribute to wellness other than healthy food and exercise. Bring in your 401K representative or financial advisor to discuss your company’s plan and options with employees, get involved in local charities and possibly create something around stress management.

Even once it’s established, a Wellness Plan takes continuous effort – it takes investment from everyone on the team to see it succeed. But when it does, it is well worth the investment because you have healthier, happier employees. Who doesn’t want that?
