As reports of the hoax surrounding Manti Ta’o and his fake-dead girlfriend have flooded the news in recent days, much conversation has revolved around the difficult concept of the huge level of deceit that can be perpetrated using social media. Well, a Brazlian website called NamoroFake.com helps take that deceit to the next level: for the bargain price of $20-$40, it will create a fake girlfriend and post a profile for that girlfriend to Facebook.com for a 30-day period. For $39.00 USD, the website will create a Facebook profile, complete with pictures and a “relationship status” change that lasts for thirty days. For $19.00, you can buy a fake ex-girlfriend. Why, you ask, would one want a fake girlfriend? Don’t worry, the website can and does answer this question: “impress your friends,” “gain confidence with women”, and “increas[ing] your self-esteem” are just a few of the benefits. According to the website, the most common reason for a client to create a fake girlfriend is to make an ex-girlfriend jealous.

And to make matters better (worse?), the website invites women to send in their profiles for a 50% profit-sharing incentive. While there are no fake boyfriends yet, the website says that plans are in the works for the future.
